barely any beach at all small

July 20, 2011

So today I woke up early, before all the kids, and I had some time inside my own head.  Oh, how I love it in there!  I need to visit more often.  And I thought to myself, you know what?  I’m determined to make this a GREAT day!

Have you ever done that?  Just had it in your mind that no matter what you do today, you are going to have FUN? If your answer is no to that, then you really need to start doing this!  Once you make up your mind to have FUN that is exactly what happens.  It’s a complete mindset. I decided right then and there that today I am not doing laundry.  Today I am not cleaning the floors or the sinks or the toilets.  Instead, today I’m packing up lunch and I’m going to enjoy my kids and we are going to head out and have an adventure.

So that’s just what we did.
I told the kids we were going to a beach that we had never been to before.  And of course they  asked, “Well, where is it?”  and I said,  “I don’t know.  But we’ll know it when we get there.”  and I begged them to just trust me and be patient with the longer-than-usual car ride.  And except for a few “are we there yets?”  they were very patient  as we headed on down the highway in search of the perfect  beach, one we had never seen or visited before.

We ventured a bit north and finally discovered a very small beach.   And when I say small, I mean teeny-tiny.
Like, barely-any-beach-at-all  small.

Isn’t this the cutest beach!
Wouldn’t you just love to have one of those homes as a vacation home?

It was surrounded by cliffs, just a tiny little cut-out cove between all the rocks and homes.  But yet this tiny little beach had soft sand and one life guard on duty, so that was good enough for us.

We had a slight walk down to this beach, but it  was so pretty down there that no one minded the hike one bit.   And this teeny-tiny beach served us well.  We  did all the usual things…

Like playing in the waves

practicing our body surfing skills  (some better than others!)

jumping over the waves

running away from the waves

and a beach day wouldn’t be complete without digging a hole to China
or hunting for the perfect sea shell

But this small, little bitty beach of ours had a few other perks that we weren’t used to.  Such as rock climbing, for the thrill-seeking child.  Because there’s one in every family, right?  One who always has to challenge himself, push the envelope a bit?  Yep, that’s our Alex.
and tide pools,  perfect for discovering various forms of sea life

The water was a bit cool, but that stopped no one.  Not even Aria.  Okay…I’ll be honest.  It stopped me.  I only got my feet wet.  What can I say?  I’m a wimp to cold.
And five-year-old Andrew was braving the waves

with a Karate chop every now and then, you know, to show those waves who’s boss.

sand, sand and more sand.
sandy feet.
sandy hands

salt water curls

These two beauties had a crush on the cute lifeguard helped me keep an eye on the little ones so that the waves didn’t snatch anyone up!  Afton and her best friend, Noelle, who is over our house so much we call her our 10th child.  We love Noelle and love having her with us.
You know who especially loves Noelle?
And so that was our day a the teeny-tiny beach.  The kids have requested that we go there from now on, so I suppose this beach has made it on our “favorite places to go” list.  Okay, we don’t really have a list like that but I’m going to start one soon!
Here is a view from the top!

Life, as they say, is a beach!
They also say Life is a highway…so which is it?  Can’t be both.

Happy Wednesday!
Make it a GREAT day.  Decide…and just do it!

What a fantastic post and a fantastic day! Good for you for making it a great one…Your children are beautiful and look like a lot of fund to be around. Do you get nervous with so many in the water – I get worried, and I only have 3! I guess the big girls are a big help in that department. I hope you get to enjoy many more days like this one.
