our mornings

October 4, 2011

Here is what a typical morning looks like in our home, during “school hours”

Everyone sitting still, concentrating on their school work

Quietly working, not pestering or distracting the person next to them…

YEAH, RIGHT!!!
Okay, I’ll admit that some days go like this…
for about two minutes.
Normally it’s a bit of madness around here in the morning.  I am still struggling to find a routine for our homeschooling hours.  Sometimes I think that our routine is simply NO routine.  Is that what works for us?  Could be.  I’m sure years from now I’ll look back on these days and  remember myself as having it all together and organized, even though in the here and now it doesn’t always feel that way.
Aria is doing her three-year-old best to do some school work.  I will say that she has great focus.  She can sit still for a longer stretch of time than her five-year old brother.   But I think that’s just a boy/girl difference.  Aria has been working on making straight lines, following the “dots” and, of course, coloring beautiful pictures for me every day.
This is a piece that I bought from Lakeshore learning.  I love it because all four of the kids get their own space at the top for their school books and supplies, and then the bottom for spots are mine.  Notice how nice and organized their spots are?  And then my spots? Not so much.
In my defense, the kids always get into my stuff.  And when I say “my stuff” it’s really just school supplies and books that I keep set aside for when we need to use them.  Not really my stuff at all.  But even if it were all “my stuff”, that wouldn’t keep the kids from getting into it. My stuff, their stuff – it’s all the same to them!
